UNDER THE LINDEN TREES

She showed me the cemetery’s letter,
vehemently shaking the paper.
Their earthly stay expired,
your bones must be picked up.

She had secured the plot
of land with a row of linden trees,
not imagining what we were
about to enact, your new
unburied capacity.

The house was freezing, a single
lamp turned on.
Impatience lifted us up, flew us to the wall
behind the railroad tracks.

A municipal cicerone pointed out the cross
leaning on the adjoining grave.
I closed my eyes and sought refuge
in the avenue under the linden trees.

The roar of the spade was heard
on the coffin’s rotten wood.

I was about to meet you at last.

The employee detached the bones,
extracted a black stocking
and proudly held it up to the sunlight.

She took my hand;
just in case, I denied you thrice.

The earth mound, the withered flowers.
Everything was spinning.

The center of the world
in the avenue under the linden trees.

Me mostró la carta del cementerio
y agitó el papel con vehemencia.
Había que levantar tus huesos
ya vencida su estadía terrenal.

Ella había asegurado el pedazo
de tierra con una hilera de tilos
sin imaginar los actos que íbamos
a representar; tu nueva categoría
de insepulto.

La casa estaba helada y una sola
lámpara encendida.
La impaciencia nos llevó en vilo
hacia el muro detrás de las vías.

Un cicerone municipal señaló la cruz
apoyada en la tumba vecina.
Cerré los ojos y busqué refugio
en la avenida bajo los tilos.

Se escuchó el estruendo de la pala
en la madera podrida del cajón.

Por fin te iba a conocer.

El empleado separó la osamenta
y extrajo una media negra.
La exhibió a la luz del sol con orgullo.

Ella me tomó de la mano;
por las dudas te negué tres veces.

El montículo de tierra, las flores secas.
Todo daba vueltas.

El centro del mundo
en la avenida bajo los tilos.
